Short Bio:

Native Israeli, Avi Miller started tapping at 12 years with Ya'acov Kalusky. The late Mr. Kalusky was a leading innovator in bringing tap to Israel. The 'passion' of tap immediately consumed Avi, and at the age of 13, he performed with Kalusky in various shows, on Israeli Television and at the Israeli Opera.

Miller was introduced to Jazz Tap on his first visit to the USA in 1984, when he met Tap Master Brenda Bufalino whose style has had a significant influence on him. Ms. Bufalino acquainted him with the origins of tap - created by African/American practitioners. However - due to his country of origin, he also incorporates in his work - as a teacher, choreorgrapher and performer - 'Middle Eastern' and Israeli movements as well as various approaches to a 'Sound Quality Technique' and references to the heritage of tap.

Miller had the honor of studying or sharing the stage with such greats as: Ya'acov Kalusky (Israel), Eddie Brown, Steve Condos, Chuck Green, Dr. Bunny Briggs, Dr. Buster Brown, Brenda Bufalino, Skip Cunningham, Barbara Duffy, Savion Glover, Gregory Hines, Lisa Hopkins, Dr. Henry LeTang, Ted Levy, Van 'The Man' Porter, Prof. Robert L. Reed, Prof. LaVaughn Robinson, Germaine Salsberg, Earl Scoggins and many others.

Back in Israel, Miller founded the Jazz Tap Center where he taught multiple courses. This included Beit Zvi, Israel's most famous Art School. Miller's students include professional actors, film stars and many active tap teachers.

Miller created and started the tradition of the Israel Jazz Tap Festivals during Passover 1988 with 'Tap Masters' from the United States. The Festivals drew students from numerous tap schools throughout Israel.

Avi Miller met Ofer Ben in 1990 and an instant partnership was formed. Their dance troupe - Tap Tel-Aviv has performed in many variety shows, TV and stage shows - as well as jazz and tap festivals. Avi Miller is the Artistic Director, and Ofer Ben is the Executive Director. They actively perform as Miller & Ben - The Israeli Hoofers. They have performed on all major stages and TV programs in Israel and in front of distinguished leaders, including the late Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

They performed their full length show: The Hoofers' Club at The Red Sea Jazz Festival - Eilat Israel, and at The First Helsinki Tap Festival, with Prof. Robert L. Reed and Bruce Stegmann, the Tap Giants Festival - Calgary and Edmonton, Canada, taught Master Classes and performed in Australia, Canada, China, Finland, Holland, Thailand, and throughout Israel and the USA.

Avi & Ofer played a major role in the production of Tap City 2001 - The First New York City Tap Festival, produced by Tony Waag. The festival featured, for the first time in New York City, tap intensive workshops and training programs at dance studios throughout Manhattan, a series of performances at The Duke on 42nd Street Theater, various panel discussions, film screenings and an innovative children's program. Tap Tel-Aviv Dance Troupe won a grant from the New York-Israel Cultural Committee and was invited to perform in two of the Broadway Shows. Besides teaching and performing, Avi Miller served as the Operations Coordinator and Web Master, and Ofer Ben served as the Student Relations Coordinator.

In 2001, they relocated the Jazz Tap Center production offices to New York City. They established the non-for-profit organization Tradition In Tap, Inc. - an organization that produces tap workshops and performances devoted to the preservation of various tap masters' historic legacy and technique. The first workshop was dedicated to 'The Father of Tap' the legendary Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson. Thus far they have produced seven sold out workshops featuring the legacy of: Dr. James 'Buster' Brown, Dr. Henry LeTang, The Four Step Brothers & Dr. Prince Spencer, Dr. Jeni LeGon, Phil Black & Dr. Jimmy Slyde. The upcoming workshop will feature Prof. LaVaughn Robinson and is scheduled to November 4-6 2005. Updated information can be found at: www.TraditionInTap.org.

In February 2002, The Oklahoma City University paid tribute to nine world-famous African-American tap dancers: Cholly Atkins, Bunny Briggs, James 'Buster' Brown, James T. 'Jimmy Slyde' Godbolt, Jeni LeGon, Henry LeTang, Fayard Nicholas, Leonard Reed, and Prince Spencer, by conferring upon them the honorary degree Doctor of Performing Arts in American dance. Avi Miller and Ofer Ben were greatly honored and thrilled, to be included at the tribute performances and TV documentary for The 9 Doctors of Tap Dance.
