Short Bio:

Ofer Ben is originally from Israel and begun his tap career when he met his mentor and partner, Avi Miller. His profession as a tap dancer and teacher was even further enhanced when he met two well known 'Tap Masters': Brenda Bufalino and Barbara Duffy.

Ben was introduced to Jazz Tap on his many visits to the USA. He was acquainted to the origins of tap - created by African/American practitioners. However - due to his country of origin, he also incorporates in his work - as a teacher and performer - 'Middle Eastern' and Israeli movements as well as various approaches to a 'Sound Quality Technique' and references to the heritage of tap.

Ben had the honor to study or share the stage with such greats as: Ya'acov Kalusky. (Israel), Dr. Buster Brown, Skip Cunningham, Savion Glover, Jeannie Hill, Gregory Hines, Lisa Hopkins, Dr. Henry LeTang, Ted Levy, Van 'The Man' Porter, Prof. Robert L. Reed, Germaine Salsberg, Jason Samuels-Smith, Earl Scoggins, and Dr. Prince Spencer, among others.

Back in Israel, he taught multiple courses at the Jazz Tap Center and other locations. This included Beit Zvi, Israel's most famous Art School. Ofer teaches adult and teen classes, and specializes in teaching the 'next generation' of tap dancers, kids of six to 12 years of age. His students have performed in various productions.

Avi & Ofer co-produced the Israel Jazz Tap Festivals with 'Tap Masters' from the United States, and other major tap events. The Festivals drew students from numerous tap schools throughout Israel.

He regularly performs with Avi Miller, as part of Miller & Ben - The Israeli Hoofers. Their dance troupe - Tap Tel-Aviv has performed in many variety shows, TV and stage shows - as well as jazz and tap festivals. Ofer Ben is the Executive Director, and Avi Miller is the Artistic Director. They have performed on all major stages and TV programs in Israel and in front of distinguished leaders, including the late Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

They performed their full length show: The Hoofers' Club at The Red Sea Jazz Festival - Eilat Israel, at The First Helsinki Tap Festival, with Prof. Robert L. Reed and Bruce Stegmann. They also performed a version of the show named Tap Giants & Tap Tel-Aviv featuring Germaine Salsberg, Karen Callaway Williams, Van 'The Man' Porter & Skip Cunningham in Calgary and Edmonton - Canada. They taught Master Classes and performed in Australia, Canada, China, Finland, Holland, Japan, Thailand, and throughout Israel and the USA.

Ofer & Avi played a major role in the production of Tap City 2001 - The First New York City Tap Festival, produced by Tony Waag. The festival featured, for the first time in New York City, tap intensive workshops and training programs at dance studios throughout Manhattan, a series of performances at The Duke on 42nd Street Theater, various panel discussions, film screenings and an innovative children's program. Tap Tel-Aviv Dance Troupe won a grant from the New York-Israel Cultural Committee and was invited to perform in two of the Broadway Shows. Besides teaching and performing, Avi Miller served as the Operations Coordinator and Web Master, and Ofer Ben served as the Student Relations Coordinator.

In 2001, they relocated the Jazz Tap Center production offices to New York City. They established the non-for-profit 503(c)(3) organization Tradition In Tap, Inc. - an organization that produces tap workshops and performances devoted to the preservation of various tap masters' historic legacy and technique. The first workshop was dedicated to 'The Father of Tap' the legendary Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson. Thus far they have produced fifteen sold out workshops featuring the legacy of: Dr. James 'Buster' Brown, Dr. Henry LeTang, The Four Step Brothers & Dr. Prince Spencer, Dr. Jeni LeGon, Phil Black, Dr. Jimmy Slyde, Prof. LaVaughn Robinson, Charles 'Cookie' Cook & Ernest 'Brownie' Brown, The Silver Belles, Harold 'Stumpy' Cromer, Miriam Nelson, Danny Daniels, Prof. Ardie Bryant and Skip Cunningham. Updated information can be found at: www.TraditionInTap.org.

In February 2002, The Oklahoma City University paid tribute to nine world-famous African-American tap dancers: Cholly Atkins, Bunny Briggs, James 'Buster' Brown, James T. 'Jimmy Slyde' Godbolt, Jeni LeGon, Henry LeTang, Fayard Nicholas, Leonard Reed, and Prince Spencer, by conferring upon them the honorary degree Doctor of Performing Arts in American dance. Avi Miller and Ofer Ben were greatly honored and thrilled, to be included at the tribute performances and TV documentary for The 9 Doctors of Tap Dance.
